2008, a great year for specialist recruiters!
2008 will certainly present its challenges to business pretty much across the board. But as ever in times of uncertainty there will be opportunities created for the more robust business models across industry - and specialist recruitment services are no exception. As hiring budgets become tighter and talent more scarce in many sectors, procuring the right recruitment services in 2008 will be key for hiring and line managers; Increasingly this will mean engaging specialist recruitment services, whether it be the job board that you post to or the recruitment consultancy that you hire. As the war for talent gets fiercer, partnering with a supplier that delivers quality every time and truncates the recruitment process will be a must to secure the top talent quickly. In this context, you can expect 2008, regardless of market conditions, to provide some protection for specialist service providers, though perhaps not immunity.
The rise of social networking sites as a recruitment tool through 2008 is a given, but similarly recruiters must recognise that these are generalist networking sites, listing general content. Facebook isn’t going to tell you what motivates an employee or a candidate and Myspace won’t let you know how good they are at their job - whether you should hire them, fire them or promote them. Recruitment will remain a people business and specialist information will remain best gleaned from a specialist human network, not a digital one. The killer application in recruitment will remain the telephone next year, however high the tide of the social networking sites may rise.
